Pedro Galicia - Class Of 1999

Pedro Galicia

Pedro Galicia

January 16, 1981 ~ July 30, 2021 (age 40)

After a long battle with cancer and forty years on this earth, Pedro Galicia passed away on Friday, July 30, 2021 at his home, in the loving company of family and friends.

Pedro was born on January 16, 1981 in South Bend to Pedro and Kathy (Swisher) Galicia. He was a friend to the world and dedicated his life to the service of others. In 1999, he graduated from Washington High School in South Bend. Years later, he started working at the St. Joseph County Public Library where he founded Save-Point, a teenage outreach program at the main library where kids had the chance to spend their after-school hours safely playing videogames or board games, and sometimes even competing in game tournaments. He was proud of all the kids that found community and comfort there. Even after he had stopped working at the library, Pedro couldn’t stop creating communities around him.

A lifelong Dungeons and Dragons enthusiast, Pedro would organize, write, and lead role-playing campaigns with his friends. In 2016, he created his most ambitious game, World Walkers, which he edited into a podcast every week for over 300 episodes. Through it, he fostered a warm, global community of people for whom the podcast—filled with Pedro’s characteristic, cunning wit and masterful storytelling—brought joy.

Pedro believed that the point of life was to have fun with the people that you love. In lieu of flowers, tell a story, joke, or sing with others. Remember him by spreading radical compassion to your neighbor and the world.

Pedro is survived by his spouse, Jess; daughter, Willow; father, Pedro; stepmother, Maria; brothers, Luis, Fernando, and Miguel; sister, Azucena; nine nieces and nephews; and friends and fans all over the world. He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathy, and his brother, Francisco “Frank” Galicia.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at 1:00pm at Palmer Funeral Home—Welsheimer North Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home from 11:00am-1:00pm on Saturday, prior to the service. Additionally, Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 16, 2021 at 12:00pm at St. Adalbert Catholic Church, 2505 W. Grace Street, South Bend, IN.
