Gayle VanHuffel-Chapleau, 73, passed away on Friday, March 16, 2018 at Center for Hospice Care in South Bend, IN. She was born on February 14, 1945 in Wyandotte, MI, to Lloyd G and Valerie C. (Elrod) Cruff, both of whom preceded her in death.

On February 14, 2000 in Florida, Gayle married Edward Chapleau, who survives. Gayle is also survived by daughters, Renee Bendit of Niles, MI, and Shelly (Jeff) Gurney of Lakeville, IN; son, Ben (Katina) Bendit of Niles; five grandchildren, Maggie Sipe, Collin Freitag, John Freitag, Adam Freitag, and Sydney Freitag; three great-grandchildren, Bailey Burmeister, Keira Burmeister, and Noble Burmeister. Gayle was preceded in death by her grandson, James M. Burmeister.

Gayle resided in the Michiana area for most of her life. She was a graduate of Washington High School in South Bend. Gayle was an avid golfer and gardener. She was a gracious hostess and was known for her generosity.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the celebration of Memorial Mass at 11:00am on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 2114 E. Jefferson Blvd, South Bend, IN. A gathering of family and friends, in celebration of Gayle’s life, will follow at Papa Vino’s Italian Kitchen, 5110 Edison Lakes Parkway, Mishawaka, IN. Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Gayle may be donated to Hospice Foundation, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
