Michael Anthony Butiste
Dec. 3, 1948 - Mar. 4, 2012

SOUTH BEND - Former South Bend resident Michael Anthony Butiste, 63, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2012. He was surrounded by his family who loved and cherished him and will miss him so very much. Mike was born in Grove City, Pennsylvania, on December 3, 1948, the second of seven children, to the union of Frank and Maxine Butiste.

Surviving members of his loving family, of which he was so proud, include his three daughters, Lisa Diane Butiste-Walsh (Sean), Carolyn Joy and Andrea Joy Butiste. He also cherished his two grandchildren, Eryn and Michael. Also surviving Mike are his six brothers and sisters, Toni Butiste-Fenner (Chuck), Frank Butiste (Sharon), Dave Butiste, Steve Butiste (Cathy), Diane Chrzan (Dennis) and Mary Butiste-Jones (Bruce); and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by nephew, John Butiste.

Mike graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor's Degree in Business and later received a Master's Degree from Indiana University. Mike was an APICS certified Materials Manager employed by Bendix/Allied Signal/Honeywell for a total of 25 years, first in South Bend, and then relocated to Rocky Mount, NC, and later to Urbana, Ohio. After his retirement from Honeywell, Mike found he was not yet ready to end his working career and relocated to Chicago to be closer to his family, where he was employed by Electro Motive Diesel until the week of his passing.

Mike was a very skilled and dedicated employee and was valued and appreciated wherever he chose to work. He was well-regarded by all those who worked with him or anyone he chose to call his friend. In December, Mike was diagnosed with colon cancer and since that time has fought a brave battle with the disease along with many other health complications.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to all those involved with his care, but most especially Dr. R. McKenna and Dr. W. Richmond, who thought of him as a hero, as well as the nursing staff at Adventist LaGrange and Hinsdale Hospitals. Not only was Mike a loving father who made many sacrifices for his daughters, he was an avid sports enthusiast and loved a sunny summer softball game any day of the week.

Visitation will be 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a funeral service will begin at 10:00 am Friday, March 9, 2012. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Park Cemetery. Memorials in Mike's name may be made to a charity of the donor's choice . Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
