Sharon (Braylock) Newport

January 18, 1952 ~ October 9, 2021 (age 69)

Sharon Newport, 69, renowned Blues Hall of Fame recipient, passed away peacefully on October 8,  2021, at her residence after a lengthy illness. Sharon was born January 18, 1952, in South Bend, Indiana to Aleck & Marie Braylock, Sr. Her father Aleck Braylock preceded her in death along with two siblings, Ann Braylock and Aleck Braylock, Jr.

Sharon was a 1970 Washington High School graduate and she received her associate degree from Ivy Tech College. She was a Blues artist and musician for over 50 years.

Sharon received 9 Indie Music Awards, two Who’s Who Awards, and she was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. She traveled to France, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, England, Whales, and all over the world and she recorded numerous albums. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Indie Music Channel. She performed several times at The House of Blues in Los Angeles, California. Her passions were painting, storytelling, and teaching music. She taught for 6 years guitar for The Alabama Blues Project.

Sharon survivors include her husband James D. Newport of Irondale, Alabama, her mother Marie Braylock of South Bend, Indiana, one daughter Barbara Harges of Phoenix, Arizona, two sons Deamon (Janeen) Harges and Andy Harges both of Indianapolis, Indiana, 10 grandchildren DeJanae Harges, McKeith Pearson, Afonya Mason, Destiny Adams, Andi Harges,  Taj (Haylee) Moore, Aja Harges, Tierra (Arminda) Urban, Aftyn Mason, and Shanethea Harges, 14 great-grandchildren, one sister Marilyn Braylock of South Bend, Indiana, a host of nephews Ambrose Jenkins, Anthony Braylock, Uriah Taylor and Brandon Braylock, nieces Chavela (James) Price, Twilah (Rob) Debose and Simone Jenkins, an aunt Rosie Brittan along with other relatives and friends.
