April 27, 1945 - May 6, 2009
SOUTH BEND - Mr. Michael John Papai, 64, Army veteran of Indianapolis, formerly of South Bend, passed away on May 6, 2009, from natural causes. Michael was born April 27, 1945, in South Bend, to Joseph A. and Virginia (Reed) Papai, and was baptized at St. Stephen's Catholic Church after which he attended a number of elementary schools.

A graduate of Washington High School in 1963, Mr. Papai joined the U.S. Army shortly thereafter. Following his military service in Korea, Michael graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington.

Michael retired as a military contact agent from the Department of Defense at Fort Benjamin Harrison. His hobbies included attending sports car races and air shows.

He is survived by his mother, Virginia Papai of South Bend; and a brother, Joseph A. (Beverly) Papai Jr.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph A. Papai Sr., an amateur city golf champion; a sister, Elizabeth Ann Papai; and twin brothers, Frank and Arthur Papai.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, May 13th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bishop Joseph Crowley Children's Fund in South Bend.
