SOUTH BEND - Richard D. "Dick" Johnson, 63, residing in South Bend, passed away at 3:40 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2008, at Memorial Hospital. He was born November 8, 1944, in Rensselaer, IN, the son of Leslie and Lotus (Fisher) Johnson, and lived in South Bend most of his life.

On November 7, 1964, in St. Casimir's Church, South Bend, he was united in marriage to Marcia L. Gumkowski who survives. They recently celebrated their forty-third wedding anniversary. Also surviving are three daughters, Cindy (Michael Jr.) Bryan of South Bend, Debbie (Randy) Grabowski of Bremen, and Lynda (Mark Schlemmer) Johnson of South Bend. Six grandchildren who he absolutely adored survive Dick as well, Alex Schlemmer, Jessica Grabowski, Madison Bryan, Zachary Bryan, Thomas Grabowski and Christina Grabowski. In addition, two sisters, Karen (Larry) Davis of Fort Wayne, and Joyce (Rick) Sinkiewicz of Crown Point, IN, survive him as well.

Mr. Johnson retired as a police Officer with the South Bend Police Dept. following 23 years of service. He was currently working in the Security Dept. at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, where he had been employed for the past 11 years.

He was a 1963 graduate of Washington High School, and was a member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #36.

He always loved being with his grandchildren, enjoyed woodworking, Purdue, NASCAR, and the Cubs. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 7, at Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend.

Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon to 4:00 and 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 6, and one hour prior to services Monday in the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Mr. Johnson may be offered to the American Cancer Society, 601 West Edison Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to all those who have been so kind to Dick during his illness. Most especially to the Staff, Security Dept. and Radiation Dept. of Memorial Hospital. To all the nurses and staff on 3rd Floor-Cardiac Unit, and 10th Floor, Michiana Hematology/Oncology, and the ladies at Gloria Jeans at the Cancer Institute. May God richly bless you.
