SOUTH BEND - Richard H. Polak, 61, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 10:10 a.m. Sunday, January 30, 2011, in the Sanctuary at St. Joseph's.

Richard was born on July 19, 1949, in LaPorte, Indiana, to Henry and Elizabeth (Aftowski-Glon) Polak. He retired in 1997 from A.M. General where he had been employed for 29 years.

Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth Polak of South Bend, Indiana; his sister, Kathleen A. (Charles) Watts of South Bend, Indiana; his nieces and nephews, Karmin M. (Jason) Meade of Granger, Indiana, Jennifer S. (Wayne) Veldman of South Bend, Indiana, and Jeremy J. Watts of South Bend, Indiana; and by many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, Henry Polak.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 4, 2011, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 until 7 p.m. Thursday in Kaniewski Funeral Home, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m.

Richard was a 1968 graduate of Washington High School where he played baseball and was a wrestling manager. He was an artist and enjoyed wildlife and Native American art. Richard was an avid sports fan and loved Notre Dame football, the Oakland Raiders, Chicago White Sox and Chicago Black Hawks. He loved to watch movies and surrounded himself with many 4-legged friends.

Although he never had children of his own, Richard was a wonderful father figure to all of his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, of whom he was very proud. His nieces and nephews have treasured memories of the many weekends Richard took them for pizza at the Starlight and then to a movie. He always made sure they had the best sports equipment and never missed any of their games. Richard was a very generous and devoted uncle.
