Guy Douglas Hullinger

SOUTH BEND - Guy Douglas Hullinger was born in South Bend, IN, February 16th, 1949.

He graduated from Washington High School in 1967, then from Purdue University, West Lafayette campus, where he was a member of the Evans Scholars Fraternity. He then took three semesters at IUSB, converting his Physical Education and Coaching Degree to Elementary Education. He also received a Master's Degree from IUSB in Elementary Education. Doug taught in the South Bend Community School Corporation for 31 years, focusing on 5th and 6th grade students and coaching basketball.

He also supervised Saturday morning recreation. Towards the end of his time in South Bend he coached varsity volleyball for his alma mater, Washington HS. His last two years in South Bend he taught computer technology at LaSalle Intermediate Academy. Doug's last six years in education were spent in the New Buffalo Area Schools teaching in their Smart Lab where he excited and encouraged students and faculty to enjoy and embrace the 21st century in the areas of video production, robotics, physics, music and art.

For over twenty years he pitched fast-pitch softball for Larry's Esquire Shop and Precision Pallets with several other teams mixed in. With over one thousand wins he retired to play beach and indoor volleyball for the next 20 years. While at Wilson Elementary he ran recreational volleyball to earn money for the sixth grade ecology based camp so that every student in the 6th grade could experience Outdoor Education first hand. Doug was also the "Doug" member of Dave and Doug Unplugged with David Hicks. They spread music and fun with their "Easy Listening" folk style at church events, coffee clubs, and many other casual venues.

Doug is survived by his wife of 43 years, Beth Ann (Weldy) Hullinger. He is also survived by their daughter, Eron, her husband, Dr. Scott Owens DVM, and their son, Hayden, who live in Lebanon, IN. Surviving brothers are Wayne (Tracy) and their children of South Bend, IN, and Gilbert (Sherry) and their children who live in Lompoc, CA. He is predeceased by his parents, Earl and Clarice (Cooper) Hullinger.

The memorial service will be held Saturday, March 14th, at 11:00 a.m. in Lydick United Methodist Church, 26510 Edison Rd., with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. A luncheon will follow in the church Gathering Room.
