MISHAWAKA - Jerome “Torchy” Torzewski, 88, of Mishawaka, IN, passed away at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Healthwin Specialized Care in South Bend, IN, following an illness.

He was born on March 1, 1928 to the late Stanley and Bernice (Grzezinski) Torzewski in South Bend, IN and was a lifelong area resident. Along with his parents; he was preceded in death by two sisters, Monica M. Peak; Virginia Szymczak; and three brothers, Modest, Alvin, and Daniel Torzewski.

Jerome graduated in 1946 from Washington High School. He retired on January 1, 1993 from the St. Joseph County Courthouse, where he worked as a Court Reporter for 36 years.

On February 22, 1968, he married Barbara J. Jacobs at St. Patrick Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. She passed away on November 16, 2005.

Torchy is survived by his two sons, Jerome II (wife Rebecca) Torzewski of Osceola, IN; Scott D. Torzewski of South Bend, IN; a grandson, Zachary Jerome Torzewski; two sisters-in-law, Beulah Rosenbalm and Nancy Jacobs; and a brother-in-law, Harry “Jake” Jacobs.

Jerome was a member of St. Monica Parish in Mishawaka, IN; and Polish National Alliance #83 and American Legion Post #357, both in South Bend, IN. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. Torchy was inducted into the Bowlers Hall of Fame of South Bend and Mishawaka. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Boston Celtics, and Notre Dame fan.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 22, 2016 at St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka Avenue, Mishawaka, IN, with Rev. Jacob Meyer officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, South Bend, IN, where Military Honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #357 and the U.S. Army.
