Richard E Snyder

Washington 1976 Richard E Snyder

Jan. 19, 1958 - Aug. 04, 2016

SOUTH BEND - Richard Eugene Snyder, 58, of South Bend, was taken unexpectedly, Thursday, August 4, 2016, while working at his Saint Joseph County farm. Richard was born January 19, 1958, to the late Margaret A. “Maggie” (Smith) and Arthur E. “Gene” Snyder and was a lifetime South Bend resident. He was also preceded in death by a sister Peggy A. Snyder. On August 21, 1982, in North Liberty he married Chantelle C. Harding, whom he cherished. He is also survived by sisters, Patricia DeClue (William) of Lander, WY and Diane Sloan (Jon) of Murphy, NC; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Richard was a graduate of Washington High School and studied agriculture at Purdue University. He had a passion for farming, and through his crops expanded his circle of friends to include many area chefs who served the food he grew. He enjoyed fine cuisine, and took pleasure in cooking with his wife. He and Chantelle frequently entertained, sharing meals, fine wine and spirited conversation with their friends and family. Richard laughed easily and loved freely; his friends knew he treasured them. A master woodworker and cabinet maker, he designed and built many furnishings in his home as well as making gifts for friends and family. Richard was a musician in his youth and a life-long supporter of the arts. The radios in each of his tractors and his pickup truck were permanently tuned to a classical music station; his circle of friends included many talented musicians. Richard was co-founder and for 10 years an executive of Michiana British Car Day.

A celebration of Richard's life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, August 13th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. with Rev. Mary Hubbard of First United Methodist Church, South Bend, officiating. The family will greet friends in the funeral home on Saturday, from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to South Bend Symphony Orchestra Association, 127 N. Michigan St., South Bend, IN, 46601 or Southold Dance Theater, 914 Lincolnway West, South Bend, IN, 46616. Family and friends may leave e-mail condolences at www.welsheimer.com.
